What compatibility means for an APK
Four declarations in the manifest meet four properties of the device. The minimum Android version meets the operating system release. The declared architectures meet the processor. The declared features meet what the device can do. And the package name meets whatever is already installed. Only the last of these is about software already on the device; the first three are decided by hardware and operating system version, which is why they cannot be argued with.
Device by device
| Platform | Runs it | How | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android phone and tablet | Yes | Direct APK install | Android 5.0 or later |
| Android TV | Yes | Downloader app on the TV | Needs a leanback entry to appear in the home row |
| Google TV | Yes | Downloader app on the TV | Same package manager as Android TV |
| Fire TV and Firestick | Yes | Downloader from the Amazon Appstore | Unknown sources lives under Developer Options |
| Windows 11 and 10 | Emulator only | BlueStacks, LDPlayer, Nox or MEmu | Needs hardware virtualisation |
| macOS | Emulator only | UTM or a macOS emulator build | An ARM64 image on Apple Silicon |
| iPhone and iPad | No | Nothing works | iOS has no Android runtime |
| Samsung Tizen, LG webOS televisions | No | Nothing works | Not Android systems |
| Chromebook | Depends | Play Store sideload where allowed | Developer mode may be required |
Why an unsupported device fails before it installs
Android reads the manifest before writing anything. A minimum version above the device's release, or an architecture the processor does not implement, produces a refusal at that point rather than a crash later. This is worth knowing because it means a failed install on an old device is not a corrupt file and not a permission problem; the file is simply not meant for that device, and no amount of re-downloading changes the outcome.
How to check a device before you try
1.Read the Android version
Settings, then About phone, then Android version. Compare it with the minimum the build declares rather than assuming a recent-sounding device is recent.
2.Identify the system, not the brand
A television's brand says nothing about its operating system. Android TV, Google TV and Fire OS accept the package; Tizen and webOS do not.
3.Check the processor family for emulators
The virtual machine's Android image must match the host processor, so an Apple Silicon Mac needs an ARM64 image and cannot use an x86 one.
4.Check storage, since compatibility includes room to install
A device that meets every declaration can still fail on storage, which is a capacity question rather than a compatibility one.
Frequently asked questions
Worth knowing: Compatibility is decided before installation rather than at launch, because Android reads the manifest and rejects a package whose minimum version or architecture the device does not satisfy.
