What a VPN actually changes

A VPN encrypts the path between your device and the VPN server and masks the address the outside world sees. Your internet service provider can still tell that you are connected to a VPN, and it can no longer see which sites you reach through it. That is a privacy change rather than a permission change, so treat it as one.

• It interferes when a service treats a shared server address as a sign of abuse and refuses to connect.
• It costs speed, because traffic takes a longer path and a shared server is often congested.

How to decide whether to use one
