Custom M3U Playlists: How They Work in a Live TV App and What Breaks Them

What an M3U playlist contains
An M3U file is text and can be opened in any editor, which makes it easy to inspect and easy to leak. Each channel is written as a metadata line carrying the display name and often a group and a logo, followed by the stream address on the next line. The file holds no schedule data at all, which is why the guide is a separate feed joined by identifier. A playlist therefore determines what appears in your channel list and whether anything plays, but not what the guide shows.
The three ways to load a playlist

The four things that break a playlist
- A remote URL that has changed, which leaves the app loading an address that no longer resolves to a file.
- Stream addresses that have gone stale, which is invisible in the channel list and appears only as a stream that will not play.
- A provider ending access, which usually shows as the whole playlist failing at once rather than one channel failing.
- A malformed entry, such as a metadata line without an address after it, which is dropped or rendered as an unplayable channel.
How to check a playlist before blaming the app
1.Open the file in a text editor
If the file downloads but shows as HTML or as an error page, the source has moved and the app is faithfully displaying nothing useful.
2.Count the entries against the channel list
A count mismatch means entries are being dropped, usually because metadata lines are malformed.
3.Test one stream address outside the app
If the address fails in a normal media player too, the source is the problem rather than the app or the device.
4.Re-import rather than edit
Editing entries inside the app is overwritten by the next import, so corrections belong in the playlist you load.
